Excellent story! I would definitely recommend others to read “Because of Winn Dixie.” Also, I will be watching the movie. I enjoy doing the blog. Seeing other student’s blog and reading their viewpoints about the story was interesting and good use of technology. I will definitely use blog in my classroom.

I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, raised in Clermont, Florida, and currently live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I write for both children and adults and I like to think of myself as a storyteller.

Here are a few more facts about me: I am short. And loud. I hate to cook and love to eat. I am single and childless, but I have lots of friends and I am an aunt to three lovely children (Luke, Roxanne, and Max) and one not so lovely dog (Henry).

I think of myself as an enormously lucky person: I get to tell stories for a living.

Opal gives Otis a Littmus Lozenge and asks why he had gone to jail. He explains he liked playing the guitar, they told him to stop playing but he did not, so they took him to jail, and stated he was not a dangerous man. Opal decides to have a party for her friends. Gloria is nice and agrees to open her yard for the party. They decorate and make egg salad. All Opal friends arrive at the party and bring something to eat. The Preacher blesses the party. Winn Dixie disappears when the huge thunderstorm began. They initiate looking for Winn Dixie but cannot be found, so the Preacher and Opal start searching for Winn Dixie. Opal was worried and could think about what she would write on poster to find Winn Dixie. They returned to Gloria Dump’s house without Winn Dixie, but Winn Dixie hid underneath the bed because of the thunderstorm. Throughout the story India Opal Buloni pursues her journey toward friendship, love, understanding, acceptance, what really matters in life and about holding on and letting go. Excellent story I would definitely recommend to read “Because of Winn Dixie.”

Opal and Winn Dixie had a schedule, every morning they would work at Gertrude’s Pets, and visit Miss Franny Block library, but her favorite place was the garden at Gloria Dump’s. Opal felt comfortable with Gloria and would tell her about Miss Franny Block stories, and about Otis had been in jail. I thought it was really sweet that Opal would check out a book and read it for Gloria Dump since her eye sight was really bad. I enjoyed the story about Littmus W. Block that Miss Franny tells Amanda and Opal. It was a sad story and it made me cry to know he had lost his family. The creation of the candy was cleaver. “The Littmus Lozenge, a candy that was famous the world over.” The secret ingredient was “Sorrow.” Opal remembers moving and leaving her friends and her biggest sadness was missing her mom since she had left her when she was small. Amanda misses her brother Carson who had drowned. When reading this part it brought me many memories it reminded me of my sister and brother who had past away and how much I miss them.

Miss Franny father, Herman W. Block, built the library for her birthday. The story about the bear was scary, no wonder when she saw Winn Dixie outside the window she got scared. The overall health of Winn Dixie has improving the bald spots disappear. Opal wanted a collar and leash, but very expensive. She decided to work to be able to afford it. Opal was feeling better because she was making friends, a sense belonging, and all thanks to Winn Dixie. Opal makes a new friend Gloria Dump, and they plant a tree together. During a severe thunderstorm Opal learn that Winn Dixie is terrified of thunderstorms. Opal begins working at Gertrude's Pets, and Otis was playing his guitar, and taught the music sounded beautiful.

2. “She had red hair and freckles.”

3. “She liked to plant things. She had a talent for it. She could stick a tire in the ground and grow a car.”

4. “She could run fast. If you were racing her, you couldn’t ever let her get a head start, because she would beat you for sure.”

5. “She couldn’t cook. She burned everything, including water. She had a hard time opening a can of beans. She couldn’t make head nor tail of a piece of meat.”

6. “… your mama loved a story. She would sit and listen to stories all day long. She loved to be told a story. She especially liked funny ones, stories that made her laugh.”

7. “She knew all the constellations, every planet in the nighttime sky. Every last one of them. She could name them. And point them out. And she never got tired of looking up at them.”

8. “… she hated being a preacher’s wife. She said she just couldn’t stand having the ladies at church judge what she was wearing and what she was cooking and how she was singing. She said it made her feel like a bug under a microscope.”

9. “She drank. She drank beer. And whiskey. And wine. Sometimes, she couldn’t stop drinking. And that made me and your mama fight quite a bit.”

10. “… your mama loved you. She loved you very much.”
